Conclusion
I tested the Recaro Rae Essential for several weeks, and in between, every now and then for a day, I used one of the “gaming chairs” available to me for comparison. Since I work in a home office and also spend most of my free time in my office, this conclusion can almost be considered a long-term experience.
I have a hard time comparing the Rae to the usual gaming chairs because it’s kind of an apples-to-oranges comparison. The chairs look similar, in the case they share the racing seat look, but somehow they are completely different. The Recaro is a chair that in a way urges you to sit healthily. At first, this was actually an adjustment for me, because I definitely missed the comfort, this “sofa feeling”, of the previous chairs something. This “Fläz factor” is missing the more filigree Recaro something and that should be mentioned in my opinion in any case – who is looking for an armchair, which is not quite right here. Apart from this aspect, however, I quickly noticed that the Rae is clearly superior to my other chairs in terms of ergonomics. After about 2 weeks, I didn’t consider the daily comparisons with the other chairs at all and even took the Recaro from the office desk to the gaming corner after work. That probably says it all.
I would also like to briefly discuss the price at this point and explain why and especially to whom I can give a clear buy recommendation. 599€ is a lot of money and quite another 100-200€ more than the average “gaming chair” costs. Beyond that, you’ll look for leather and metallic components in vain. Is there any way to justify this conclusively? Yes, you can! I like to remind you of Igor’s long-term headset tests and can show you how inferior leatherette looks after 2-3 years:
A robust textile fiber is much more durable, which makes sense in view of the five-year warranty and also has the advantage of being breathable, so you don’t sweat so much in the summer. I also trust the robust base made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic to have a long service life, because while one or two die-cast aluminum bases have broken in our household, the plastic base of the Sedus office chair, which is a good 50(!) years old, has never given me a headache. By the way, the latter is also equipped with a textile fiber cover, which after decades of intensive use has not yet shown major signs of wear. Without wanting to accuse the Chinese of anything, you will very likely notice over time that the Recaro is handmade in Germany and not produced in a large factory “cost-optimized” in huge runs. Compared to “real” office chairs, which are quickly adorned with four-digit price tags, the Recaro Rea is actually a bargain considering its good seating position.
So who is the Rae suitable for? It’s probably easier to say who it’s not suitable for. I don’t see young people who don’t suffer from back pain and who tend to lie down rather than sit in front of a PC or desk on this chair. But grown-up people, especially those who make their living sitting in front of a desk, should definitely take a seat in one of these chairs before they ruin their backs even more on supposedly ergonomic bling-bling chairs. Of course, this doesn’t mean that all other gaming chairs are bad, but the Recaro is simply better suited for long periods of sitting in the home office.
The chair was provided by Recaro for this test without any preconditions. No influence or remuneration was exerted.
