Reviews of so-called “gaming chairs” always cause heated discussions. Arguments such as: “These chairs are not ergonomic”, “not good for the back”, “poorly processed” followed by a wide variety of opinions and recommendations are preprogrammed there. More and more recently, the Recaro Rae has been recommended and we have finally managed to organize this model and put it to the test. Is the Recaro really better? Let’s find out.
The list of arguments why these gaming chairs are totally bad for your back can be extended practically indefinitely. Poor ergonomics, inadequate back support, unhealthy seating position – it all adds up. And certainly not without reason, because as a rule, companies have a clear goal: to make a profit. The production costs must always be taken into account, even before considering the back and, consequently, the health of the buyers.
With a price of 599€, the Recaro Rae is a good 100-200€ more expensive than the usual suspects, but still has almost certainly no higher margin. Why? 5-year warranty and handmade in Germany, to name just two arguments. I can say up front that the Rae Essential is an excellent office chair. But, as we all know, every advantage also brings a disadvantage, and we want to clarify why the chair might not be the optimal choice for everyone in the test. First, however, we unpack the good piece.
Unboxing
The outer box is kept very simple.
Only a rough image of the chair and some lettering adorn the surface.
The individual parts are held in shape by cleverly folded sheets of cardboard. The parts are wrapped in plastic film to protect them from dust.
Of course, Recaro chairs also come to the buyer in individual parts.
Let’s take a closer look at the individual components. The base is made of fiberglass reinforced plastic.
In fact, this made me wonder for a moment at a price of 599€. On the other hand, it is with me but, if at all, so far only die-cast aluminum foot crosses broken, never those made of plastic.
The gas spring meets class 4 and is made by KGS.
The 4D armrests are also made entirely of plastic.
But here, too, the all-clear is given: The armrests feel very stable and of high quality and, in contrast to many competing products, practically don’t rattle at all!
The seams of the fabric cover are flawless.
The workmanship on both the front and back leaves no room for criticism.
The manufacturer’s logo is embroidered (on both sides).
The heart of the chair, the synchronous mechanism, is already connected to the seat when it is delivered.
Nice to see that there is quality control at Recaro.
The mounting material:
The screws are of decent quality, with the tool I would have preferred a more solid design.
The small cardboard box hides the rubberized plastic rollers.
