Conclusion
I took away a few interesting and also unexpected insights from this unexpectedly exciting experiment. Positive and negative. First of all, it was a lot of fun to tinker with a good old Vega again. The crafting potential of this card is simply unmatched in my opinion! I have never seen more adjusting screws that you could turn on a graphics card. But this article should not be about tinkering and tweaking. The question was whether you can still do something with the map in 2023.
With the “tweaks” and optimizations shown, I have certainly created very favorable conditions to make Vega look a bit better than one would probably expect given its reputation. Before I draw my final conclusion, I therefore also want to note that the RX 6600 was practically 5-20% ahead of the optimized Vega and the overall system also drew a whopping 70-80 watts (!) less from the socket. The RX 6600 has always had the reputation of a small “efficiency miracle”, while Vega was known as a glutton from the start. However, with a price difference of at least 150€, you would have to play for a few thousand hours even at current electricity prices to amortize the purchase price with the lower consumption.
What’s the bottom line?
So let’s pull all the findings together. With a price around 100 Euros, the Vega is currently a real bargain. You get a graphics card with solid 1080p performance (in the entry-level range!) that offers incredible tinkering potential for a low financial outlay. In my opinion, this makes it especially interesting for people who might want to deal with the whole topic of undervolting, overclocking, etc., but simply don’t dare to do so with the hardware they have painstakingly saved up. For the fact that the cards were called AMD’s biggest fail at the time, these things just can’t be killed. And to spoil something: You can still unleash fails of a completely different caliber on the buyers..
