Test system
Let’s start with the system, which should serve as the basis for the graphics card test. This is the hardware that was originally only intended for testing cases, but has been upgraded over the last few months to the point where it is also suitable for other shenanigans. I will soon present the complete system in more detail in the third part of my basement conversion, here are just the preliminary key data.
I think in this environment the little Vega also felt quite comfortable.
Driver Hack
Based on the recently opened topic in “The Guru of 3D” forum about activating Smart Access Memory on old AMD cards, I also had a look at this topic. Smart Access Memory, SAM for short, is a technology developed by AMD, which, in simple terms, can bypass a limitation of the PCI bus and thus cause an acceleration in memory accesses. If you want to know more about this, you can have a look at Igor’s explanation of Sam, what is it actually? view
Anyway, SAM was initially available exclusively for Radeon graphics cards of the RX 6000 series, later the RX 5000 cards were also allowed to use it. Although it would probably have been technically possible on the older models, the feature was never officially released for Vega or Polaris graphics cards. This was also the case with the Vega tested here, where the option was grayed out:
However, some clever users managed to activate the technology on older cards with a simple registry hack at the end of last year, and the corresponding changes were listed in the Guru forum, or a .reg file was offered that creates the entries.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000]“KMD_EnableReBarForLegacyASIC”=dword:00000001
“KMD_RebarControlMode”=dword:00000001
“KMD_RebarControlSupport”=dword:00000001

However, many users complained that adding the corresponding lines would not work on their system and quickly came to the conclusion that this hack would only work on a certain older driver version. However, since the current 23.2.1 version is supposed to provide a decent performance boost for many games, people were frustrated not to be able to use the hack. However, if you spend 2 minutes thinking about the corresponding registry entries and can establish the connection between the specified path and the driver version listed in this path, you will quickly find the simple solution. For the current driver the entries just have to be made in the current directory (/0007 instead of /0000 at the end).
For Radeon Software 23.2.1
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0007]“KMD_EnableReBarForLegacyASIC”=dword:00000001
“KMD_RebarControlMode”=dword:00000001
“KMD_RebarControlSupport”=dword:00000001
After a restart, an activated SAM option smiles at us in the driver:
