The response from Mindfactory came quite quickly and was actually also disappointing. But one can certainly not blame the dealer here:
Dear customer,
we thank you for your message.
No, unfortunately, we do not have the ability to credit the item. We forwarded the item and it was exchanged by the manufacturer/pre-supplier. The limitation was likely increased to deal with the heat problem so the cards can be exchanged.
If you have any further questions, we are at your disposal.
From my point of view, the argument of the lifted limitation does not hold up. Because, on the one hand, no card is discarded, but all cards with a hotspot problem are definitely repaired without a great deal of effort, and on the other hand, a repair (I have recreated this myself) is completed in less than 15 minutes. This includes cleaning and repacking. Therefore, there would be no RMA-related reason to simply double the limitation. Because the original card 222/1500 will or has certainly been delivered to a customer again or even resold. With that, the chaos would be complete.
Moreover, the reader definitely did not receive a new card. Apart from the fact that the seals on the components were already broken and everything shows signs of use…
… there are also noticeable tool marks from manual interventions on various screws. Not to mention the fingerprints on the outer packaging or various shiny surfaces like the spring cross. All employees at PowerColor wear gloves…
It really begs the question whether there was an expansion of the limitation or perhaps even two or more of such “limited” series exist. It certainly feels like a fraud on the trusting customer, generating significantly higher prices with an (actually non-existent) exclusivity. The extent to which one can or should take legal action here naturally exceeds my expertise, as I am not a specialized lawyer. This is something the reader has to reconcile with themselves and their mood.
But unfortunately, this story once again shows that certain things really need to be questioned more and that you shouldn’t believe everything that marketing comes up with when the day gets too long. Next time, one should really insist on a certificate. Because then, for example, I would have definitely filed a lawsuit. That much time simply has to be there.
