Actually, after almost 2 weeks of endless benchmarks and the first roundup of the new workstation graphics cards, I wanted to quickly cover the new Radeon Pro W7000 series as a separate article and draw a preliminary line before the next cards. So, the four new cards with beautiful, unique product images (which I’ve already done) and all the other tests (Heating up, power consumption with spikes, power supply recommendations, infrared images of the heating, fans and temperatures, teardown with circuit board analysis, and much more). Unfortunately, I’ve only completed about 50% of these tests, and as I write this, it’s Tuesday, 15.08.2023 around 4:38 pm. Finishing everything by the next morning would certainly be sheer overestimation.
But squeezing something else in quickly isn’t really feasible right now. Sure, we have fans, but that won’t work in a jiffy either, especially when the front-end decides to act up precisely when the developing colleague is enjoying his well-deserved vacation. Murphy’s law at its finest! So today there’s nothing, or rather just this status update here and my iPhone in a battery comparison to an almost identical counterpart. So nothing with real hardware, and I’m annoyedly celebrating the gap that’s only half-filled by the iPhone. Just publishing some random nonsense just to meet the quota is boring too. Speaking of vacation and breaks… We’ve all heard about this mysterious thing called “work-life balance,” haven’t we? That legendary balance between work and leisure that one can achieve when… well, when what exactly
First, I had to realize that nobody really knows what Work-Life-Balance means. Some think it’s the perfect division between work and leisure, while others believe it’s the art of secretly doing yoga during a benchmark, speaking to ten people at once on the phone, and writing an email with the remaining free hand. Some claim to have found their Work-Life-Balance. Often, these are the same people who drink green smoothies and meditate to the graphics card god during a full moon. The rest is done by the colleagues.
You wouldn’t believe how many people have tried to give me tips on achieving this imaginary balance. “Set boundaries,” I often hear. Or something like “Take time for yourself”. As if I don’t already have enough on my plate. Now I should also keep a calendar to plan my leisure time? Great… Let’s be honest: Most of the time, this weird Work-Life-Balance theory feels like a dizzying dance on a tightrope. A constant balancing act, hoping not to plunge into the abyss of total exhaustion. That’s why this term exists in trendy Denglish (idiom for stupid mixed German and English, ok let’s call it Germlish), fitting for lukewarm, unsweetened mate tea. Fancy a hash cookie?
Maybe we should all see this so-called Work-Life-Balance not as perfect equilibrium but as constantly changing priorities. But I’m still helplessly searching. In the meantime, I’ll keep trying to figure out how to work, communicate, and drink a green smoothie simultaneously. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll find this mythical balance. Until then, all I can say is: Work-Life-Balance? Never heard of it! I’m going back upstairs to work in the lab. It’s always nice to have at least one constant in life, isn’t it?
Tomorrow, Alex will take over and present something nice to you, and only on Friday will you get to admire the planned AMD quartet. Amid all the measurements, I almost forgot that one doesn’t just measure but also has to write everything down. And today, if the shipping company is good to me, my new equipment for the lab will arrive. I’m bursting with curiosity, I must admit. The week remains exciting, that’s for sure. And I’m off again; otherwise, I’ll never finish with AMD’s workhorses.
