Real achievable clock rates and overclocking
The clock rates of the achievable boost again rely on different boost steps for clearly defined temperature ranges. Thus, the card stably reached up to 2820 MHz (blue curve) without further OC, and up to 3120 MHz with maximum overclocking (power limit), which could also be kept stable in Ultra-HD. With voltage boost via the enabled Afterburner, up to 3165 MHz was possible, at least in WQHD, but not more.
Temperatures
Thus, we can see that the GPU temperature is around 59 °C at maximum in both gaming and silent modes in the closed case, the hotspot is about 12 Kelvin higher, which is a decent value. In Silent mode, all temperatures are up to 8 Kelvin higher on average.
Fan curve and operating noise (“volume”)
Let’s also take a look at what is automatically generated when the waste heat is removed: various fan noises. The silent mode lives up to its name. The fans spin at well below 1100 rpm, which can be called whisper-quiet. In gaming mode, you are then at around 1365 rpm, which is still very good because the fans are very quiet out of the box.
Measuring in a closed enclosure is a bit tricky, so I fixed the previously measured speeds in the closed setup and simply removed the side panel. The measured 31.5 dB(A) in silent mode are just as outstanding as the 33.7 dB(A) in gaming mode without overclocking. There is absolutely nothing to complain about here. However, it is important to evaluate the fans only after about 20 to 24 hours of operation, because they then act much quieter. I can’t say for sure whether the bearings have to run free first, but I actually experience this phenomenon with every SUPRIM-X card. An initial slight chirp is then blown away.
