Atari, Pac-Man and the good old book manuals – an infernal trio that nostalgically reminds us of a time when video games were still real adventures and didn’t require detailed online tutorials to be understood. Let’s start straightforwardly with Atari, the grandfather of all game consoles. Atari was so revolutionary back then that it brought games into living rooms long before the word “gaming” was even cool. The graphics were so minimalist that you almost had to be a certified meditation master to recognize a castle or a spaceship. But who needs realistic graphics when you can have imaginative interpretations that inspire creativity instead? Running!
Then there was Pac-Man, the game that taught us that eating dots and escaping from colorful ghosts in an endless maze could be the pinnacle of digital fun. Pac-Man was so much more than just a game – it was a way of life! Who would have thought that tirelessly wandering around a neon-colored maze while being chased by ghosts could be so addictive? It’s almost as if the game subtly anticipated the realities of adult life.
And then there were all the book manuals that revealed the secrets of the games. These booklets were often more comprehensive than the game itself and they not only contained instructions, but also background stories that added epic depth to the pixel art. Who needs online forums or YouTube walkthroughs when you can have a physical guide with charming illustrations and enigmatic descriptions instead? These guides were like a treasure map to be deciphered, an adventure in itself.
Rene’s publications were already legendary in 1999, long before the usual digital suspects went online.
