Sound Check
Now we come to the most important part of this test – the sound check. As always, I tested the microphone in various scenarios and in this particular case also compared the audio quality between XLR and USB connection. One thing I want to say in advance, the Maono microphone can do something and does not have to shy away from the comparison with the recently well-reviewed Elgato microphone!
With XLR connection
In the first setup, the PD400X was operated on the Elgato Wave XLR interface. Here, compared to the Wave DX, it is immediately noticeable that the recording is significantly higher with identical settings on the interface.
XLR direct
XLR indirect
Although the Elgato microphone has a lower background noise in comparison, noise in the form of a beep can be heard, which is not the case with the Maono.
With USB connection
Compared to the XLR connection via the interface, a significantly reduced volume and yet a higher background noise can be heard with the USB connection. The Maono is quite suitable for on-the-go recordings on the smartphone, but I see the advantage of the interface connection on the home PC or in the studio.
USB direct
USB indirect
Equalizer
Connected via USB, a few additional functions are then available, such as an equalizer function. This was also tested, of course.
Headset comparison
Finally, the obligatory comparison with a gaming headset to show the qualitative differences here.
