The Edifier M601DB 2.1 stereo speakers are a good example that appealing quality does not always have to be reflected in an exorbitant price. Equipped with several useful features and an acceptable sound quality, they are definitely an option for listening enthusiasts with a limited budget. You can read why I make slight restrictions at the beginning, although the overall package is actually not that bad, in the review. The issue with the highs and lows could also be a case for the phrase bank, but more about that in a moment in the teardown. Of course, I’ll also provide the reasons for my objections.
But what actually triggered me to test this 2.2 system? First of all, I’ve received many inquiries about such systems up to 200 Euros, because it’s become a bit quiet about such systems in the larger media. There is also almost nothing about the Edifier M601DB, not even in larger English-speaking media. Except for unboxing, there is almost nothing and a teardown is also nowhere to be seen. And since I like to remember my own S350DB, which started the obligatory career run through the immediate family, it was almost obvious to take a closer look at one of the successors.
Generally speaking, a 2.1 speaker system can take an entertainment system to a new level quite inexpensively and, above all, in a space-saving way. As the name suggests, such a system consists of two satellite speakers and a (hopefully) potent subwoofer. Even if it doesn’t offer the experience of a true surround sound system, a 2.1 speaker system usually outperforms a smaller 2.0 speaker system in terms of audio performance. This also applies to the desktop, because a wirelessly connected subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room without bumping your feet under your desk. But enough of the introduction, we’ll get straight to the point.
Scope of delivery and accessories
Edifier has never been lax when it comes to accessories, and that’s the case again this time. In addition to the set of subwoofer and two satellites, you again get a lot of cables besides the remote control. A line-in cable with 3.5 mm jack to RCA, a stereo RCA cable, a decent TOSLINK cable and the power cord for the subwoofer. Both the subwoofer and the active right satellite are not connected to the grounding conductor, which can usually avoid a possible potential difference (ground hum) when connecting grounded third-party devices.
The remote control literally shines with a piano lacquer surface, which is really annoying. However, the range of functions is sufficient, because you can reach all functions absolutely without complaint.
Unboxing, look and feel
With 11.54 kg net for all three speakers, you’re already in the medium weight range, light is definitely something else. But that doesn’t hurt. Let’s start with the satellites, of which the one on the right is the active part. The power cable is firmly connected and secured inside by means of a strain relief. There’s even a real power switch. With dimensions of 130 × 225 × 160 mm (W x H x D), the satellites are quite compact, which is quite conducive to space-saving use. The black foiled MDF enclosures are not new, but everything is quite neatly finished. The bass reflex port is located at the back. So is the panel with the inputs.
The front covers are attached with simple pegs and for acoustic reasons I can only advise everyone to take them off better on the satellites. The very softly mounted midrange driver with 82 mm diaphragm diameter doesn’t mind much, but the 25 mm silk dome does. Even though a suggested waveguide is present, the cover unfortunately dampens audibly in addition to the very low dispersion angle. With the subwoofer, however, you can leave it on.
The subwoofer measures 278 × 300 × 335 mm (W x H x D) and is naturally the heaviest part. The built-in woofer has a diameter of 203 mm and has a medium-sized stroke. Again, the panel with the controls and power connector is located at the back. The bass reflex port, on the other hand, is on the right side, which should be taken into account when setting it up. So please do not place it too close to the piece of furniture or the wall, here you need at least 20 cm distance.
