Alphacool Ice Block ES Acetal GeForce RTX 2080/2080 Ti (2070 & 2080 Super) Review – GPU Water Block Defined Differently

Test run and temperatures

I reconnect the graphics card directly to the chiller, increase the power target to the maximum 380 watts, the core clock by 200 MHz and the voltage to the adjustable maximum. Then I start Witcher 3 on maximum details at 3840 x 2160 pixels (Ultra HD). The control measurement showed approx. 378 to 379 watts over the measured 30 minutes for the graphics card alone, the water temperature was as always constant 20 °C and the room temperature was 22 °C. This means that we now have the best conditions for later comparisons with other products.

With a GPU temperature of 36 °C on average, I register under the socket on the back of the board a good 38 °C, which is still quite good and is sufficient for the good midfield among the already tested coolers.

Depending on the positioning, the memory modules are warm between 36 °C and 43 °C, which is good in the upper midfield. The voltage converters become warm at a maximum of 47 to 48 °C, which is not bad, but is not enough for the tip of the smaller VRM block. The reason is also due to the omission of the pads for the coils and caps of smoothing, which can be supplemented very easily. Then you can easily get down to 3 Kelvin with the value for VRM 2.

In a direct comparison of all the measured values of the previously tested coolers, the water block from Alphacool, which has been available for a long time, does a good job and ends up in the overall performance behind the Hydro X XG7 from Corsair in the middle before the Alphacool GPX-N and the Phanteks Glacier RTX 2080 Ti. In this normalizing overall result, I deliberately doubled the GPU temperature because it is especially important for achieving the maximum possible boost steps of the GPU.

The cooler is therefore a solid component and in sum well managed. Even with the chiller and the very high flow rate, the product performs very well. You can live with this, even if the big appearance is missing visually. But this is to be hurt when you consider that you can use a completely different hosed cooler here.

Summary and conclusion

The current street price of 119 Euros is not really super cheap, but despite the differences with the rest of the competitors, it is nevertheless a very interesting offer. It is a very well-processed cooler that appears solid and simple and will certainly find its target group. That really means everything, because water blocks are not rocket technology in themselves. Nevertheless, the cooler receives a purchase tip for all those who do not want or can not use a cooler with a terminal on the top for reasons of space.

This unique selling point is also what led me to this test and yes, the cooler does exactly what it is supposed to do. The only downside is the very mediocre and especially thick pads, which should definitely be replaced by ultrasoft pads. Then the performance is really good and the RAM is not overly physically charged.
