After dealing with the topic of LCD and OLED panels in the last article, today we take the next step on our journey around the basics when it comes to monitors. From the advantages and disadvantages of the last article, we were able to take away a few things for today’s topic in the transfer. Not all LCD panels are the same, and not all OLEDs are the same. Especially when it comes to color reproduction. Colors are important to one person and virtually indifferent to another. If you compare the professional user with the ultra-eSport gamer, then two worlds meet here. And probably one will not be able or willing to understand the other in the end.
Precisely for this reason, I make today’s article. If everyone takes something away from the topic, the articles yet to come – about the actual monitors – and why they end up being good or bad will be easier to understand. So the theory!
Monitor sizes, panel types and special features | Part 1 Monitor basics
Today we will focus on the topics of color space (Gamut), color fidelity (ColorChecker) and gray scaling (Gray Scale). Now everyone knows the English terms for it. Other topics, which I will not go into in full depth, include: Contrast, color subsampling (chroma subsampling) and HDR. Other buzzwords, of course, inevitably still come into play in the course of today’s issues. So there will also be some things that I have to define or operationalize – at least briefly. Likewise, in this context, I will also introduce you to: What do I measure and how do I measure it? We need that for later.
Foreword
I try to keep it largely short and as simple as possible. Likewise, I will not go into all possible color spaces, that would go beyond any scope today. I focus on the color spaces that are common for PC users and garnish some additional information to create the best possible understanding in the end. For the professional users (video, photo editors and print users), please understand if I don’t go into all the details. This requires its own article. Opinions also differ widely on the topic of gaming in terms of color settings. Which is why I won’t be shedding any light on this topic today.
The goal is: to remain quite general and to create a basis at the end. This is precisely why there are also international standards, which are increasingly important today.
We’ll start with color spaces and why this is a very important topic when choosing a monitor. We then combine all this with color fidelity and gray scaling to understand to what extent this is related. Of course, also what you need it for in the end. So let’s get started!
