Summary and conclusion
MSI has gone all out with the Z790 Godlike to make up for the high price with a correspondingly high number of features and innovative functions. Starting with the configurable Smart or Reset button, over the VRM Loadline Saturation control and up to the seven, partly toolless M.2 slots. Furthermore, there are 10 and 2.5 Gbit Ethernet, Thunderbolt 4 with Displayport passthrough and a massive 26 (13*2) + 2 phase power supply for the CPU.
It is clear that Intel’s LGA1700 socket and Z790 chipset have limitations that cannot be overcome even with a lot of engineering skill. Thus, only 2 PCIe slots remain for graphics cards, capture cards or other expansion cards, which partly also have to share the bandwidth with the M.2 slots. But Intel’s “desktop platform” simply doesn’t have more lanes. Still, integrating so much connectivity and features on a motherboard is an impressive feat.
The overclocking potential for RAM is also very good for not being a 2 DIMM XOC board. DDR5-7200 is on the QVL and can actually be operated stably a la Plug and Play, at least if you didn’t draw a complete blank in the silicon lottery for the CPU and its IMC, but MSI doesn’t have any influence on that either. For CPU overclocking, all means are also available to squeeze the performance maximum out of the CPU for every conceivable usecase. Static, dynamic OCs or a hybrid of both can be implemented without any problems and the voltage converters don’t even break a sweat, thanks to the lush component selection and ingenious cooler design
To even seriously discuss the price-performance ratio of a 1399 euro motherboard is honestly somewhat surreal. But as we all know, diminishing returns are always to be expected with absolute high-end SKUs, and if you take this into account, the Godlike with its barrage of features doesn’t seem so unreasonable after all. Apart from that, there will still be enough people who want to have the biggest and best motherboard of a generation just out of principle. The MSI MEG Z790 Godlike fills this niche better than almost any other board and leaves no feature wishes unfulfilled.
The motherboard was kindly provided to us by MSI on a loan basis without any obligation to publish. In addition, there was no influence on the tests and their results.
