Windows 12 rumors have gained momentum in the industry. Now, a senior Intel executive has hinted that the new operating system may appear in 2024. David Zinser, Intel’s chief financial officer, said in an interview at the Citi 2023 Global Technology Conference that the coming year would be “particularly exciting,” especially for Windows. Zinser did not speak directly about Windows 12, but his statement suggests that the new operating system is in the pipeline.
Zinser’s statement is the first official confirmation that Windows 12 is in development. Microsoft has yet to reveal any details about the new operating system.
We actually think ’24 is going to be a pretty good year for client, in particular, because of the Windows refresh. And we still think that the installed base is pretty old and does require a refresh and we think next year may be the start of that, given the Windows catalyst. So we’re optimistic about how things will play out beginning in ’24.
The rumors about Windows 12 have been circulating for some time. In March 2023, the tech magazine Windows Central reported that Microsoft was working on a new operating system to be released in 2024. If Windows 12 is indeed released in 2024, it would be the first new version of the Windows operating system since Windows 11, which was released in 2021.
Details about Windows 12
Details on Windows 12 are still sparse. However, based on Microsoft’s current approach with its apps, it looks like the next Windows version will also get the “AI treatment” to greatly improve the consumer experience. The operating system could use the latest AI hardware available on Intel and AMD CPUs. This hardware could be used to enable a variety of AI features, such as:
- Improved speech recognition
- More personalized recommendations
- More efficient task management
There have been industry reports that Windows 12 could be a “subscription-based” operating system, but these have been refuted for now. However, it’s possible that we’ll see some “extra” paid features.
Outlook
With this information, the Windows 12 launch and related information is still at an early stage. Therefore, it is not possible to make a conclusive statement here. It will be interesting to see how the details about the new operating system develop, as this will undoubtedly reveal Microsoft’s future direction with its resources.
