It was long overdue, but is now finally official. In revision 2.01 of the ATX version 3.0 (Multi Rail Desktop Platform Power Supply) from February 2023, Intel has finally had the design of the contacts specified. This was preceded by months of investigations and tests, which have now also been completed. But it also proves that I was right with what was already published in several articles and also videos, only at that time, also for NDA reasons, it was denied to publish evidence. Does anyone remember my longer comments on contact design (Astrom vs. NTK)? Specifically, it was also about my comments on the disadvantageous “dimple” design of the double-slotted Astron connector and my preference for the NTK contact (“Tulip” or “4 Spring”), which was also justified by internal measurements.

The results of the investigations on the part of the power supply and connector manufacturers also show nothing else, so that the recommendation in the ATX 3.0 document is now only logical.

I had announced to you that we will start the “12VHPWR” week tomorrow. This news is quasi the prelude and also only a part of it, because the contacts are of course essential for all investigations. But they also found their way into the four 12VHPWR adapters from CableMod, which I might want to introduce to you officially and exclusively already on Tuesday (I guess I’ll be done with the final measurements in time). Of course, also with various heatflow analyses at 450 and 600 watts and corresponding radiometric videos.
But as it is, with more elaborate setups and test methods, you sometimes accidentally get findings that I would like to present to you in a third part, because it could also affect and influence the cooler and backplate design of the graphics cards. But that’s another story. But we will also publish them this week. I had been accused of not having measured anything. That wasn’t true, by the way, but not everything from engineering can be released to the media in real time. But I’ll finally make up for that this week. Promised.
