Operating system and handling
For the OS I chose Batocera on one card and Recalbox on the other. Both operating systems can be easily flashed onto the SD card and are installed automatically after the first power-on. I was able to get my WLAN dongle to work with Batocera, but unfortunately not with Recalbox. As emulating systems I tested the whole range from C64 to Playstation 1 and Dreamcast. As expected, there are minor jerks on Nintendo 64 and newer. However, these are less significant than with a Raspberry Pi 3, for example. All systems of the previous generations run buttery smooth and cannot be made to jerk even with elaborate shaders. The automatic key binding for all consoles, regardless of the operating system, works excellently and is well thought out.
In its basic form, the Go Super can be played well, but has to make sacrifices for larger hands or long fingers. Without a self-printed holder, you will notice the first signs of fatigue after only half an hour. The feel of the controls is very good, although the directional pad tends to make a bit of noise. Better key damping would not have been bad here. The analog sticks work excellently and do not drift, even if the heads of the sticks are a tad too small in my opinion. The keys on the front do their job well and there is nothing to complain about in terms of pressure point.
In order to achieve the greatest possible improvement in the handling of the system, I had to consult my 3D printer, which then allowed me to get the following overall picture after a search on Thingiverse:
With the holding extension, extended uses can now be sustained without pain, cramps or fatigue. Of course, the sleek design suffers a bit, but that is bearable in my opinion because you can free the console by sliding it out at any time. Still a small stand constructed and printed, our little friend also finds a safe shelter in the living room at home.
Conclusion
If you’re in the mood for portable retro gaming and don’t mind a bit of handling during construction or installation, the Odroid Go Super is perfect for you! It’s just especially great for me to be able to relax and play a little round of the old classics on public transport, at the doctor’s office or on the couch. Unfortunately, no micro-SD card is included in the scope of delivery. If you don’t own a 3D printer, you can of course ask others to print the attachment, but even without it, the Go Super cuts a very good figure. For the price of 105 €, you get a well-made, high-performance and portable gaming console, virtually childhood to go!
As a passionate retro gamer, the console has completely convinced me, and anyone who is interested should definitely not shy away from a look.
