NVIDIA and TSMC are closing a deal for 3nm AI GPUs, and so the green giant will have its next generation of AI GPUs manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm process. The B100 “Blackwell” GPUs are expected to hit the market in the second half of 2024 and offer a significant performance boost over the current generation.

The Blackwell GB100 GPUs once again use a chiplet design, where one chip is composed of several smaller chips called chiplets. This offers a number of advantages, including higher yield rates, more flexibility in chip design, and the ability to combine different chiplets with different functions. However, the more complex structural design of the Blackwell GB100 GPUs could also lead to higher production costs. However, this could end up affecting the price of the GPUs for consumers.
For NVIDIA, which monopolizes more than 80% of the AI GPU market, the next generation B100 will use TSMC’s 3nm family and is scheduled to appear in the fourth quarter of 2024. It will seize AI deployment business opportunities while the iron is hot and suppress AMD, Intel and other challenges.
NVIDIA, after all, had recently announced that it was moving forward with the development of Blackwell AI GPUs. According to a report from DigiTimes, NVIDIA has already signed a deal with TSMC to manufacture the Blackwell GB100 GPUs on TSMC’s 3nm process technology. The 3nm technology enables higher performance and efficiency at a lower cost. However, TSMC currently still faces difficulties in producing in 3nm. These include low utilization and a lack of state-of-the-art production equipment. Therefore, it is possible that the Blackwell GB100 GPUs will not be able to be manufactured in 3 nm until later in 2024. This corresponds to the planned release date of the GPUs.
This move is further evidence that NVIDIA is looking to further solidify its leadership position in AI. The Blackwell GB100 GPUs will allow the company to further extend its supremacy in areas such as machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing. NVIDIA’s larger competitors, AMD and Intel, are also working on next-generation AI GPUs. However, these GPUs are not yet as advanced as the Blackwell GB100 GPUs.
NVIDIA is currently in a dominant position in the AI field. The company has set a goal of generating $300 billion from AI products by 2027. To achieve this goal, NVIDIA needs to further manifest its lead over the competition. The introduction of the Blackwell GB100 GPUs is therefore an important step in this direction. The GPUs will give NVIDIA a significant performance edge over the competition and help the company further extend its leadership in AI. Whether you will then like this as an end customer of normal graphics cards is a completely different story.
