Computex 2023 is approaching and I have been on the lookout for a fast external data storage device that is not too bulky, offers 2 TB of data volume, does not immediately break down when copying for a longer period of time and, above all, can cope with the Taiwanese heat. In addition to my external documents, the videos that I want to record with my smartphone and gimbal at Computex this year should be stored here. Despite the local data flat rate, it is an illusion to be able to stream consistently well in the hustle and bustle of the trade show. I’ll have to get to it later in the hotel, and I won’t fill up my notebook, which only weighs 1 kilo, with the built-in 2 TB SSD.
The NETAC ZX 10 portable SSD
You can get the part from the retailer with the big A for around 170 Euros and if you catch a special offer, even a bit cheaper. The SSD is also universal. Not only is it compatible with laptops, desktops, and mobile devices, but it also offers the ability to expand the storage space of gaming consoles by serving as a repository for your games. It’s almost a shame I don’t have one. Additionally, the thing allows Win To Go to be used by MacBook users who want a dual system without taking up their computer hard drive space. Ok, I don’t have a MacBook anymore either, just my ultra-light LG Gram.
Equipped with an external USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C interface and an internal PCIe interface, the Netac ZX10 allows for transfer speeds of up to 1050 MB/s. Well, that is in theory. In practice, synthetic streams with around 500 MB/s read and write are possible, which is completely okay. This allows me to quickly move and directly edit files, even on the drive. With a storage capacity of up to 2 TB, the SSD allows me to store all my movie files in a handy pocket size.
The Netac ZX10 comes standard with a USB Type-C to A cable and a USB Type-C to C cable, ensuring smooth functionality whether you’re on a computer or a mobile device with a USB Type-C or Type-A port. In terms of compact and user-friendly storage, the Netac ZX10 relies on a sleek aluminum chassis, which the manufacturer says emphasizes design and portability. With its mirrored accents, the design also sets a counterpoint to other SSDs, making it an excellent fingerprint card. FBI edition, after all.
The aluminum case is also a cooler, which should be taken into account. After around 60 minutes of full read and especially also write accesses, this surface was around 54 degrees hot, but you should easily be able to stay below 40 degrees in normal use. The SSD has a USB-C port on the side for one of the included USB cables and two status LEDs. There are no more secrets and I’ll really stress my travel companion in a moment. What must, that must!
