With the GH40 ENC, MSI launches its first gaming headset with noise cancellation for improved intelligibility during communication. Besides the mentioned noise cancellation, other highlights like robust metal hinges and decent sound are supposed to be on board. Whether all this is really feasible in a 60€ headset can be read in today’s launch test. Speaking of the launch, Igor had already measured and evaluated the headset in September 2022, but the launch was postponed until today. Whether anything has changed in the meantime, you can read in detail here today.
When I hear the term “noise cancellation”, I always have to think of that strange “underwater sound” that many cheap microphones produced with extremely low bandwidth and the associated compression, when we marveled at the first video chats on the Internet or smartphone many years ago. That must have been around 20 years ago, just after the moon landing. Joking aside. So far, only really expensive microphones or AI-supported algorithms like Nvidia’s RTX Voice have managed to achieve decent noise suppression with a justifiable reduction in the actual recording quality.
Therefore, I am always a bit skeptical when an inexpensive gaming headset is supposed to achieve this feat without any expensive technology or lush computing power. I wonder if this is the reason why the GH40 ENC was only officially launched now, even though it was already presented at Gamescom last year We can only speculate about that. By the way, Igor made the measurements for this headset in the lab. However, there are tangible facts to marvel at when unboxing the device.
Unboxing
The GH40 ENC comes in a simple MSI design and looks more serious than playful.
There was only a plastic foil in the box, but I don’t know what Igor has already removed in the run-up to the measurement. At first glance, the headset does not look super high-quality, but still very neat.
The first impression still holds up to closer inspection.
The foldable headband is equipped with a sturdy metal hinge.
In the same mechanism, the adjustability of the temple is also integrated.
In addition, the temple is equipped with a thick and very soft pad with imitation leather cover.
The somewhat stiff cable also integrates the remote control. This is equipped with small LEDs.
The foldable microphone is very flexible and can thus be placed quite well directly in front of the wearer’s mouth.
