The fan control similar to the model AMD also uses with fixed points has been in the driver for quite some time. You could unlock it as follows: Look under C:Program FilesIntelIntel Arc Controlresourcejspagesperformance for the file performance tuning.js. Replace it with the following file: performance_tuning. if you have to change the file yourself, e.g. because of new drivers, look for line 111 and edit this as marked below. Restart and done. The file is based on the latest currently available driver DRIVER VERSION: 31.0.101.4034 BETA, DATE: January 12, 2023.
The whole thing should look like this, you have a new tab where you can select the manual fan curve. Have fun with it.
If you cannot overwrite it because of the permission, delete the existing file and replace it with the new one.
Conclusion and summary
I have now spent some time with the Intel ARC and can’t really say anything negative. In my course, the card runs decently throughout, with all games starting and running without issue. The performance still varies a bit in parts, but the drivers have generally improved significantly and many weak points have already been addressed. What remains is that the driver still runs into an overhead quite early, which prevents better fps in some titles. This can affect older titles in particular.
With newly released titles, the ARC brings its full potential to the road, so you don’t have to worry about that and support is also guaranteed with the upcoming new graphics chips from Intel. So, if you don’t only play old titles, the ARC is currently a very good alternative that also convinces in terms of price/performance. In FHD, it can also be ray traced sometimes. The 8GB are already quite tight on the ARC, you can forget about excursions with UHD textures and ray tracing, e.g. in WatchDogs or FarCry 6, with 8GB.
However, if the price is right, the 750 and the Phantom tested here are also a very good alternative, especially compared to the Nvidia portfolio currently in the price range with 3060/3060Ti and 3070 (much more expensive) or AMD’s 6600XT which also only offer 8GB. However, the Intel ARC has a hard time against a 6700 with 10GB or 6700XT with 12GB. A big problem for upgraders is that the card requires RBar. If your platform doesn’t support this, leave it alone!
All others can grab a good offer below 350 € without hesitation and get a fast GPU with potential in upcoming and current titles for a fair price. The Limited Edition also comes with a future-proof 16 GB Vram. For the entry into the RT world in FHD or QHD with upscalers like FSR or Intel XeSS, the ARC is the ideal partner. We can only hope that Intel will also provide competition in the high-end sector with upcoming chips in the GPU segment. I’ll also be writing an article on the current RDNA 3 generation soon, so anyone interested in tweaking these maps should check in with Igor from time to time.
