The 12VHPWR cable is probably a fragile thing to be careful with, and it's unfortunately now the standard for all NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 graphics cards. Manufacturers of power supplies and custom cables like CableMod have gone a step further to offer more durable cables, but it looks like even these can burn out if not connected properly.
In this case, a company representative promised to clarify the occurred case with the affected user. As a reminder, all NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 graphics cards are all equipped with a 12VHPWR connector, which can easily burn out if not connected properly. Although this has been confirmed as a user error, it also shows that the actual design of the connector is not optimal. Despite numerous tutorials and videos showing how to properly connect the plug, cases of cable meltdowns still pop up daily on various tech forums and Reddit.
When the adapter problems became public at the time, CableMod was one of the first manufacturers to offer its own cables, which were supposed to solve the difficulties with the spacing and bending of the 12VHPWR connectors by using its own design. CableMod was praised by many for solving the problem quickly and as soon as the cables were listed for retail and pre-orders, all stock was already sold out as well.
However, as with standard 12VHPWR cables, CableMod cables can burn out if not connected properly. While we can't say for sure if that was the case here, all signs point to it. In the pictures submitted by redditor u/Humble-Brilliant, we can see that both ends of the connector (the cable and the graphics card) have burn marks, but CableMod talked to the user and it turns out that the card survived and was not damaged.
That would have been really annoying if the card had been damaged, because the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 is a very expensive card that retails for around $2000. Cablemod responded quickly to this issue and asked the customer to contact technical support to resolve the issue with the affected user. In addition, CableMod says that if their cables damaged the card, they would offer a replacement, as they have done so in the past (in very rare cases).
"Very sorry about that – please reach out to our support and we will make it right with you! Our products come with service and we help every customer out."
"The card is not damaged (we spoke to him) but in case our cables would damage a card, then we would replace the GPU – we have done that in the past in very rare cases where our cables damaged something."
It's good to see CableMod offering proper customer support and apologizing to their customers, even though we know that the 12VHPWR issues are mostly due to user error. We are also aware that the PCI-SIG 12HPWR connector is not as user-friendly as the older 8-pin connectors.
