With triple fan and overlength: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X Trio in review

Summary

A lot helps a lot, so much is already certain. With the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X Trio, MSI not only improves the old Gaming X, but for the first time relies on a new cooling system that actively cools VR MOSFETs, coils and also the capacitors of the GPU voltage converters with a new heat sink. The fact that this works better than the old design could be impressively proven.

The card is also almost whisper-quiet, even under longer full load and in a closed structure. That then, but only then, with furmark the temperatures of three GDDRX5 modules are already 3 degrees above the specification, is almost annoying. You can certainly live with that, because in normal gaming you still have between 5 and 10 degrees reserve, but it's the famous little patter that hits the B-note.

The Power Target is well chosen, because with normal manual on-board devices (afterburners) you can achieve the clock that the respective GPU outputs individually. More can then only be done under the threat of violence and modification of the shunts – but hardly anything will bring anything. The long-term stable upper limit of more than 2050 MHz in Witcher 3 then also represents the means that we were able to achieve again and again with cards with good cooling and acceptable chips. With less demanding games, it goes almost to the 2.1 GHz limit, but air is air and boost merciless.

You have to be able to handle the very high weight and the extreme length, because not every housing will offer enough space and stabilization possibilities. A cube that allows up to 40 cm of card length and houses the motherboard horizontally would be the ideal case.

Cons
– optimal Power Target
– extremely quiet under full load
– hardly spool-feathers
– good OC potential
– adequate factory OC
– Processing
– Price
– very long
– relatively heavy
– VRM cooling not optimal

Conclusion

With the purchase tip, we reward MSI's courage to leave the beaten track and to swap the homely feel-good climate of the old-fashioned with something new. Fresh wind instead of slab construction, the customer will thank it. Only with the memory VRM will MSI improve. But that was promised to us during the visit here in the laboratory.

For the normal use case, the card is sufficient, almost too much. But who doesn't like the longest in the computer?
