Aorus Gaming Box for the RTX 40 GPUs – Third attempt of the external GPU solution with a well-known bottleneck

This is the third generation of the AORUS Gaming Box, following the RTX 20 and RTX 30 models released in recent years. The next-gen box is said to be equipped with NVIDIA’s flagship RTX 4090 graphics, and that’s not a mobile variant, but the actual desktop GPU. Whether it would not have made more sense to focus on smaller Ada cards is a question that can be raised. Feasibility study or not. Yes, a GeForce RTX does really well as an image carrier, but all eGPU solutions, regardless of the manufacturer, suffer from a common problem: the limited bandwidth of the connection to the PC.

Gigabyte’s WaterForce RTX 4090 GPU is already equipped and known with an all-in-one cooling solution. However, this model is soon to be joined by another water-cooled RTX 4090, but this time for a completely different market. Inside the AORUS RTX 4090 Gaming Box is a custom RTX 4090 24GB model with a full liquid cooling loop inside the case. This case also has a built-in power supply, so theoretically it only needs three cables: power cable, display cable (either DisplayPort or HDMI), and of course the Thunderbolt cable itself.

This technology is used by the box for connection to the laptop or mini PC. It is currently unclear whether the RTX 40 Box has Thunderbolt 4 support, which would have been an upgrade over the last series with TB 3.0. However, due to the limitations of this standard, it would still provide the same maximum bandwidth of 40 Gbps, so GPU performance would likely not improve.

Furthermore, the case expands the I/O with two additional USB 3.0 Type-A ports and an Ethernet port. Compared to the predecessor, the RTX 40 box has a front USB Type-C port instead of Type-A, and there are also fewer display ports, but none of the currently available AORUS RTX 40 cards offer two HDMI ports anyway. The Gigabyte AORUS RTX 4090 Gaming Box is currently not listed on the official website, so the full specifications cannot be confirmed yet.
