With the next refresh of the K70 – in this case the K70 MAX – Corsair introduces the brand new magnetic switches. Thanks to the adjustable trigger point, the MGX switches are supposed to achieve the perfect balance between fast response (gaming) and maximum precision (typing). You can read whether the “wonder switches” succeed in this test.
Source: CorsairWhen I first heard about the adjustable magnetic switches, I had already inwardly agreed to the review before I was even asked. From euphoria, my attention obviously suffered a bit, because until I received the keyboard I was rock solid in assuming that you could adjust the “resistance” of the switches, when in fact it was the release point. At the end of the day, however, this is of course just as exciting! Of course, to check out how the brand new MGX switches, soft padded palm rest, and subtle visual refresh affect the K70, we first have to free the keyboard from its packaging.
Unboxing
Compared to the predecessor, the only thing that has changed in the packaging design is the label and the color of the bezel, which is now black instead of yellow.
The built-in MGX switches and the compatibility with practically all common systems are especially emphasized:
A welcome step forward: The hardware is wrapped in environmentally friendly paper instead of plastic foil.
The palm rest is also sufficiently protected from dust and other environmental influences this way.
There’s the thing. The first impression leaves no doubt that you are dealing with a high-quality product. The glass bead blasted matte surface doesn’t look as “noble” as the brushed deep black surface of the K70 RGB Pro, but it’s also not nearly as susceptible and harmonizes very well with the rough PBT keycaps.
Speaking of the keycaps: Like the baseplate, the K70 MAX’s keycaps are not jet black, but rather a very dark “space gray” and have the usual good feel.
Under the keycaps, however, is the real star of the show, the magnetic MGX switches.
The keyboard’s case is made of transparent plastic, which makes my nerd heart beat faster for some inexplicable reason. Cool design element! Of course, the familiar cable routing for the mouse and the rubberized feet are on board again.
Compared to the predecessor, the wrist-rest now has a much thicker padding.
It also has a transparent base and is equipped with magnetic docking feet like the predecessor.
The USB-C port of the detachable cable and the already known switch for the “Tournament” mode are on the back.
The edges of the baseplate have a glossy finish, which is a visually sophisticated contrast to the many matte surfaces.
Of course, the K70 MAX also comes with a bit of paperwork and accessories.
For one, there’s the sheathed USB-C cable:
And two alternative keycaps for the Space and ESC keys, as well as a simple keycap puller. It’s a shame that the included keys are once again cheap ABS caps that don’t do justice to the keyboard’s high-quality appearance, neither visually nor haptically.
