Pixel response times vs. overshoot @ 60 and 240 Hz refresh rate
Everyone can guess what comes next. An OLED panel has no overdrive, it is simply fast. So fast that although the LDAT software can display a response time of 0.04 ms during measurement, it is not allowed to be included in the evaluation. Why? This is simply due to the resolution. The sensor can “only” measure at 8200 Hz, so 0.12 ms is the end of the line. No matter what the software thinks it has measured. In the end, it doesn’t matter, because OLED is worlds ahead of the current LED competition.
It doesn’t matter whether I measure 200, 144 or 100 Hz. The response time of the pixels always remains the same and overshoot is never an issue!
ELMB Black Frame Insertion (BFI)
The PG34WCDM is the first monitor to come around the corner with a usable BFI mode. Yes, the Samsung OLED G8 can do this too, but did I say a word about it in my article? No, because the G8 can only do it at 16:9 and 60 Hz. The PG34WCDM can do it in 21:9 format and at 120 Hz. You also have to set the 120 Hz before you can even activate ELMB. VRR, HDR and other functions can then no longer be used. However, you can still adjust the brightness. Let’s take a look at 240 Hz vs. 120 Hz BFI.
What you see here is basically 240 Hz vs. 240 Hz. Sounds strange at first, but that’s actually the case. This is because BFI mode inserts a black image between each frame. This reduces the refresh rate by half, i.e. 120 Hz. This has the advantage that if you can’t get 240 FPS on the monitor with your hardware, you can activate ELMB and end up with the same motion clarity as with 240 Hz. You can definitely do this if you can do without VRR.
