The A17 Pro introduces hardware ray tracing in a new GPU, and console-quality games have been announced for the phone. Apple’s A17 Pro chip brings console gaming to the smartphone.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will get the first 3-nanometer chip, the A17 Pro. The A17 Pro has 19 billion transistors and a 6-core CPU with two high-performance cores (which Apple calls a “faster mobile CPU”) that are up to 10% faster than its predecessors, and four high-efficiency cores. The 16-core Neural Engine can process up to 35 trillion operations per second, and Apple is confident with more speed here as well. There are also dedicated engines for ProRes, an AV1 decoder, and the Pro Display Engine.
Apple is introducing a new GPU with a custom shader architecture, which is the biggest change in the company’s GPU history. It has six cores and is up to 20% faster than its predecessors. The GPU enables mesh shading, hardware-accelerated ray tracing and more. Ray tracing is four times faster than the software-based option on the A16 Bionic. The GPU and Neural Engine can also work together to scale. Apple sees the GPU as a big advantage for mobile gaming and has announced games like Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 Remake coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
These games were previously only available for console and PC. Apple also unveiled The Division: Resurgence and Genshin Impact. Ubisoft will bring Assassin’s Creed Mirage 2024 to the iPhone – it had previously been announced for console and PC. The new GPU is a big step forward for the mobile gaming industry. It will allow developers to create even more powerful and realistic games that run on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
The A17 Pro also has a USB 3 controller that allows up to 10 Gbps. This means it will be faster than the USB Type-C port that replaces the Lightning port on non-Pro models. Apple proposes that users will be able to use USB 3 over the USB-C port to quickly transfer Pro video to a Mac or record directly to an external storage device. It will also support 4K60 ProRes. The A17 Pro also features a second-generation ultra-wideband chip for better precision in Find My or for sharing locations with others.
The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max are both made of Titanium Alloy 5, which Apple says makes these phones lighter than their predecessors. The phone features the thinnest bezels ever seen on an iPhone, reducing dimensions while maintaining screen size. On the Pro models, Apple replaces the mute button with a custom action button that lets you launch apps, activate the camera, use shortcuts, or mute the phone if you prefer.

The iPhone Pro is introduced with a brand new 48-megapixel main camera with an aperture of f/1.78. It can now shoot in 48-megapixel HEIF with focal lengths of 24mm, 28mm and 35mm. The iPhone 15 Pro also has a new 12-megapixel 3x telephoto lens camera, while the larger size of the iPhone 15 Pro Max allows for a 5x zoom (120mm focal length, f/2.8 aperture). The sensor used in the telephoto lens is twice the size of the one in the iPhone 14 Pro. The iPhone 15 Pro Max also features a brand-new three-axis optical image stabilization with 10,000 micro corrections per second (the iPhone 15 Pro has dual-axis image stabilization). There is also a new 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (focal length 13 mm, aperture f/2.2) with improved night mode.
Apple also announced that the ultra-wide and main cameras can be used together to create 3D video for Apple Vision Pro. However, this feature will not be introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro, but will be available in an iOS 17 update later this year. The iPhone 15 Pro will be available starting at $999 for a 128GB model, the same price as last year. The iPhone 15 Pro Max will be available starting at $1,199 for a 256GB model, which is the same price as last year for that capacity, but will no longer offer the cheaper 128GB option. Pre-orders begin Friday and the phones will be available Sept. 22.
iPhone 15 and 15 Plus get new A16 Bionic chip
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus resemble the design of the iPhone 14, available with a 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch display and coming in pink, yellow, green, blue or black. The displays now feature Dynamic Island, which was first introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro. The iPhone 15 features a completely new camera system, adding a new 48-megapixel main camera with a focal length of 26mm and an aperture of f/1.6. Apple relies on the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic here, which includes two high-performance cores, 4 efficiency cores and a 5-core GPU. A new second-generation ultra-wideband chip allows the iPhone 15 to connect from more distant devices that use the same chip.
The new iPhones are the first to use USB-C for data transfer and charging (although MagSafe and Qi 2 are still options). USB-C will also be coming to AirPods Pro Gen 2, and you’ll be able to charge AirPods or Apple Watch via USB from your iPhone. Apple will also make a USB-C version of the EarPods. The iPhone 15 will be available from $799 and the iPhone 15 Plus from $899.
