As is already known, AMD’s reference design (MBA – Made by AMD) has some problems regarding the connection of the power supply cables. It turned out that due to the design of the cooler cover, certain 6+2-pin cables cannot be fully inserted into the board. This problem only affects certain cables that have a small protrusion designed to better mate the connector halves.
It is worth noting that these cables have been in use for many years, so it is surprising that the new AMD reference design is not compatible with them. This problem was also noticed by us, among others, communicated directly to AMD and later also addressed in the launch article. Originally, it was planned to leave the launch completely to board partners.
AMD sent us a corresponding statement on the topic while Igor was already on the plane:
We are very pleased with the volume of Radeon RX 7600 cards available globally from our AIB partners. We expect RX 7600 reference design cards to be available over the coming weeks with a design that accommodates all power supply cables.
However, due to the interest in AMD’s own design, the company now actually intends to launch its MBA cards. Fortunately, this is not yet available in stores, but AMD has already prepared store pages that clearly confirm that there are plans to do so. Since these cards are not yet available in stores, there is no need to worry that anyone (except us evil critics) might have trouble with the cables.
Thus, a reference card of the RX 7600 with an improved design will be available in the coming weeks. Here again the review about the RX7600:
