AMD has significantly improved the ray tracing performance of its Radeon graphics cards on Linux. The new drivers, which are based on the open-source Mesa RADV Vulkan, use “monolithic pipelining” to boost performance. This means that ray tracing calculations are now performed in a single step, instead of multiple steps. This significantly improves performance. The new drivers are already available for some AMD graphics cards, including the RX 6000 series and RX 5000 series. One can download the new drivers from the Mesa website.
Seurer has released some numbers after the driver update, showing an increase of almost 20% for titles like Quake II and DOOM Eternal. This is a very positive development and shows that AMD remains committed to improving the ray tracing performance of its Radeon graphics cards on Linux. It is rumored that Hitman III with the new RADV “Radeon Vulkan” drivers will offer a nearly threefold performance increase over the old driver. This is a very positive development, as the ray tracing performance of AMD graphics cards on Linux has been less than optimal. The ray tracing improvements are really impressive and show that AMD is really trying. This will certainly boost the confidence of Linux gamers knowing that AMD is committed to improving gaming performance on their platform.
With the merging of the RADV “Radeon Vulkan” drivers with AMD’s official Vulkan drivers, it will be exciting to see how the two drivers compare. On paper, the Mesa RADV Vulkan drivers currently have the advantage, but AMD has recently announced massive upgrades to its Linux drivers. So it’s possible that AMD’s official Vulkan drivers will soon surpass the performance of the Mesa RADV Vulkan drivers. AMD has also announced that its RDNA4 graphics cards will receive initial support for Linux. This is another positive step for Linux gamers, as it means they will be able to use AMD’s new graphics cards on their platform as well.
We can continue to be curious about how things will develop in the future and which drivers will prove to be the best for Linux gamers.
