Summary of the measured values
First, we determine the actual start-up and shutdown speeds or voltages, as well as the actual maximum speed of the fan (PWM or DC). This allows first conclusions about the quality of the motor, the controller and the fan bearing:
Then we measure each fan exactly four times. Once as a pure case fan without radiator and then with 25 mm, 45 mm and 60 mm radiator. The results (except for the flow velocity and temperature, which are shown in the respective protocol) you can see now exemplarily for one of the runs of the test fan from Thermaltake:
We photograph the front and back of the fan and also record the type of decoupling, colors and other visual gimmicks for later in the database.
The following figures are excerpts from the multi-page measurement reports. The first measurement protocol contains the volume flow, i.e. what is often referred to as “throughput”.
The listing of the individual values is concluded with a summary and cumulation:
This is followed by the static pressure, which we determine by measuring the differential pressure:
Again, these are listed individually and then cumulated together:
The measurement of the sound level is based on dBA (Slow) and is also output as an average value at the end.
Summary and conclusion
Although this is a Herculean task, it is guaranteed to be worthwhile, since such comparable values, determined under identical conditions, are hard to find on the Internet, if at all. When enough fans have been measured, we will also put an interface to the database online. Free for all and without the paywalls that are unfortunately becoming more and more common. The website is currently funded by my own advertising revenue and support from my own measurement and development lab, as well as community initiatives and donations. I hope and wish that in this form also for the future, because we want to make such information available to all as usual and do not want to create financial hurdles.
My personal thanks go here once again explicitly to Pascal Mouchel for his craftsmanship, the conception and the taking over of the measurements. Once we’ve evaluated the initial feedback, of course we’ll get right to work, because somebody’s got to do it sometime.
