E3 games fair cancelled due to Corona – Gamescom to take place

The rumours were already in full circulation last night and now it is official: The E3 2020 was cancelled due to the escalating health crisis caused by the coronavirus. The E3 organizers, the Entertainment Software Association, have issued a press release promising a refund to anyone who has already purchased tickets for the show, and that a kind of "online experience" is being considered for June. is pulled.

The organizers have published the following message, which I have translated once:

After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our long-standing E3 partners – we have made the difficult decision to: E3 2020, which will be used for the 9th to 11. He was scheduled to cancel in Los Angeles on June 6.

Following the growing and overwhelming concern about the COVID-19 virus, we felt that this was the best way to deal with such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are not able to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we also know that it is the right decision, based on the information we have today.

Our team will contact exhibitors and participants directly to inform them of the possibility of a full refund. We are also working with our members to explore ways to coordinate an online experience to present the industry's announcements and news in June 2020. We would like to thank all those who have shared their views on the new edition of E3 this year. We look forward to presenting E3 2021 as a redesigned event that brings together fans, media and industry in a demonstration that showcases the global video game industry.

Some E3 participants, including Microsoft, have already begun discussing alternative plans. There are rumors that other publishers, including Warner Bros. Interactive, may be planning its own Nintendo Direct-style online events. The situation is obviously different with Gamescom, as the pre-sale for the fair at the end of August started as planned. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops up to that time.
