I’ve been officially testing monitors at Igor’sLab for almost two years now. I started out quite rudimentary with a very cheap colorimeter, the SpyderX and a mixture of DisplayCal and the SpyderX software. Everyone starts small, of course. The whole thing then developed quite quickly and we gradually upgraded and managed to get industry partners on board. First came the really big software update with Portrait Displays Calman Ultimate. The linked article should be familiar, although I will of course have to revise it again based on today’s article.
Grundlagen für unsere Monitor- und Display-Tests – Portrait Displays Calman Ultimate im Einsatz
Then, thankfully, Calibrite supported me and provided me with another colorimeter and a spectrophotometer for my tests. With the ColorChecker Display Plus and the ColorChecker Studio, you basically already have everything you need for home use to ensure your workflow – from image to print – is color-critical. And all at an affordable price. (A dedicated review of all measuring devices will be published soon)

Unfortunately, there was and still is a problem. The ColorChecker Studio is unfortunately not supported by Calman Ultimate. So I can’t use it to profile and validate my monitor tests in conjunction with Calman. Therefore, thanks in part to the display reference presets available in Calman Ultimate, I conducted my tests with ColorChecker Display Plus. I am well aware that it is possible to get measurements completely wrong with a colorimeter. In the end, however, my results always matched those of Monitors Unboxed or TFT Central. Because when in doubt, I also validated with ColorChecker Studio and DisplayCal. Better safe than sorry.
Since the end of 2023, also thanks to the help of Simon Baker (TFT Central), UPRtek is officially on board as another industry partner of IgorsLab. More or less. The fact that I’m only reporting on this now has a lot to do with the fact that I had to clean up a big mess – called Apex the fan revolution – and am now in charge of rebuilding the measurement technology for the fan tests.
So, now that there’s been a lot of general prelude, I’ll get into the basics. I’ll briefly explain the differences and advantages and disadvantages between a colorimeter, a spectrophotometer and a spectroradiometer. Then I’ll show you how I’ll be using the UPRtek MK550T in the future. Let’s go!
