Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room. At over 400 Euros, the Crucial Ballistix MAX SKU with 4400 CL19 and RGB is a truly high-end RAM kit, which also brings with it a corresponding level of expectation. And speaking of negative points, we must unfortunately also mention XMP compatibility. A straight CAS latency or a clock rate as a multiple of 266 MHz would be desirable for current platforms, but as a prospective buyer you can know that before you buy. Additionally, Crucial could also double down on a potential refresh of the kit and integrate a secondary conservative XMP profile, as other manufacturers are now frequently doing.
The workmanship and construction of the Ballistix MAX modules is among the highest quality I’ve ever had the pleasure of testing, and again a significant step-up from the normal Ballistix bars. And while the lighting may not be to everyone’s taste, compatibility with third party software is a given and Crucial’s own RGB software is even offered as a mature and surprisingly tidy alternative. If you need a break from the color madness, the modules are more than worth a look even when switched off, and if you want to save a few Euros, you can of course go for the SKU without LEDs.
With 4400 Mbps at a CAS latency of 19 in the XMP profile, the RevB memory chips from Micron are a real house number in the highest quality class and thus play almost at the very highest performance level. Crucial’s exact binning with less than 0.1 ns tRCD effective latency reserve does not allow a pure tightening of the timings at constant clock rate, but the modules scale amazingly well in clock and tCL with RAM voltage, up to the legendary 5066 18-23-23-42 in our test. The resulting heat is easily dissipated by the lush heatsinks and the load on the CPU’s IMC also remains within limits. Oh, and you also get 32 GB total capacity, compared to the conventional 16 GB at such clock rates.
The English saying “Jack of all trades, but master of none” really applies here in the best sense, as long as you don’t shy away from a little manual tuning. Maybe there are other products with better performance, more extravagant design or more capacity. But to combine the compromise of all these factors in one product and to offer it at a relatively reasonable price, no other RAM kit manages so far as well as the Crucial Ballistix MAX RGB 4400 CL19 2x 16GB kit. If you’re looking for a high-end RAM all-rounder in a timeless design, you definitely won’t be disappointed here, also in terms of availability.
