We recently reported on the series production of HBM3E memory from SK hynix. Now they are going one better and presenting a new SSD at this year’s GTC that has it all.
The company is thus presenting its first fifth-generation SSD. It is called PCB01 and is a fifth-generation PCIe2 SSD that is used on AI1 PCs. SK hynix plans to launch two versions of PCB01 by the end of the year, targeting both large technology companies and private customers.
The new SSD should offer interesting technical specifications. It is said to provide a sequential read speed of 14 gigabytes per second and a sequential write speed of 12 GB/s. This means that the PCB01 has a doubled speed specification compared to its predecessor generation. Above all, there is room for language models, as this enables the loading of LLMs3, which are required for AI learning and inference, in less than a second.
Another important feature is energy efficiency. This is said to be 30% better than the previous version. Power consumption is thus better managed for the performance-intensive AIs. In addition, SK hynix has applied Single-Level Cell (SLC)4 caching technology to the product, which allows some of the cells – the memory areas of NAND – to operate as SLCs with fast processing speeds. The technology enables fast reading and writing of selected data, accelerating the operation of AI services and general PC operations.
A 4-single-level cell is a memory cell type of NAND flash that stores one bit of data in one cell. As the amount of data increases, the memory cell becomes a multi-level cell, a triple-level cell and so on. Although more data can be stored in the same space, speed and stability decrease. SLC accelerates the processing of selected data.
Jae-yeun Yun, Head of NAND Product Planning and Enablement at SK hynix, sees an opportunity to further prove himself and attract everyone’s attention. In addition to the leading position of HBM3 memory, the company also wants to be a leader in the on-device sector.
PCB01 will not only be highlighted for its use in AI PCs, but this high-performing product will also receive significant attention in the gaming and high-end PC markets,” he said. “Our much-anticipated product will allow us to solidify our position as the global no.1 AI memory provider not only in the HBM field but also in the on-device AI area.
While there are no further details on the pricing of the product yet, we are excited to see what SK hynix will bring us.
