It’s not all gold that glitters and whines
Certainly, with a retail price of well over 200 Euros, the Shargeek Storm 2 naturally plays in the league of VIP power banks – the sticker price can take your breath away, especially when you consider the prices of the competitors. And so, we take a look at the small weaknesses that occurred in our test. The Plexiglas seems to be a permanent magnet for dust, dirt, and unfortunately also scratches. Therefore, the included fabric bag is not just a fashionable accessory, but an absolute must to maintain the beauty and functionality of this small powerhouse. After all, you have paid a decent amount for it.
What also surprises me a bit is the absence of a suitable power adapter. Yes, one usually has plenty of such parts in inventory, but at a price of over 200 Euros, I simply expect a perfectly matching power adapter for fast charging, which is tailored to the power bank. Another point must be mentioned, because I was glad to not have to see and hear a graphics card for once. The coil whine caught up with me. At least somewhat. The notebook and almost all “normal” devices are inconspicuous, but when I charge my iPhone 13 Max Pro, a full squeaky concert is on.
And because we are in a good mood today, I’ll tell you a small, short story about it. One day, while my smartphone, the LG notebook, and a pair of wireless headphones were charging simultaneously, the coil whine started its loudest and squeakiest aria it had ever sung. And the conversation went like this:
- “HELP!” cried the smartphone. “It sounds like a drugged chipmunk performing an opera in my lightning port!”
- “I can’t hear anything, I can’t hear anything,” murmured the wireless headphones, while they desperately tried to prioritize the harmony of the charging process over the chaotic concert.
- “Folks, folks, please, let’s remain calm,” said the notebook sensibly, even though its screen was already flickering with discomfort. “It is just our friend, the coil whine, delighting us with a little serenade. Maybe we should try to appreciate the… uh… artistic performance?”
- The devices reluctantly agreed, and so they listened to the tireless singing of the coil whine, the squeaking and croaking, the whining and whistling, culminating in a strange, surreal symphony of electrical energy. When the aria finally ended, the power bank was completely exhausted, its energy almost entirely depleted, but with a feeling of satisfaction and, yes, even a certain artistic satisfaction.
- “Well, that was… interesting,” said the smartphone as it disconnected from the power bank.
- “Yes, very… unique,” agreed the tablet.
- “I think I now have tinnitus,” added the headphones, but they smiled nonetheless.
And so they all lived happily until the next charging cycle, in a world where even the smallest coil whine can find a stage to play its very own, very special music. Or something like that… And don’t forget: The opera ticket costs well over 200 Euros.
Man muss wirklich testen, was man besitzt.
Zusammenfassung und Fazit
The power bank, which is supposed to charge gadgets, is itself a real gadget for true geeks. It is the visual appearance and the features that trigger the must-have effect. The extremely high price and a few technical oversights such as the coil whine or the missing option to define the minimum and maximum charge state of devices prevent a real purchase recommendation. But it is a tip for all those who do not let minor details stop them and can provide the necessary play money.
Fairly, I have to say that many power banks rattle with the iPhone, but they also cost well under 100 Euros. A rattling Bentley, on the other hand, is more for the gallery, but well… It is only the phone that acts as a concert organizer. The rest represents the silent majority. I have one more nice toy, the airport security hyperventilates every time, and at the end of the day there is still battery left. It’s acceptable, not much more is possible.
