A pre-production model of the new iPhone 15 was subjected to the Geekbench 6.2 benchmark earlier this week. The device ran iOS 17.0 and had the Logic Board name “D83AP”. The A17 Pro chipset, which is built into the iPhone 16.1, is the industry’s first “3nm” chip. Apple has set high goals for this chip, promising improvements across the board, including the largest GPU redesign in Apple’s history. The new CPU is up to 10 percent faster than the previous-generation A16 Bionic, or so Apple says.

The Geekbench results
The Geekbench results confirm the performance gains of the A17 Pro. The chipset scores 2914 points in the single-core test, which is a 10% increase over the A16 Bionic. In the multi-core test, the chipset scores 7199 points, which is a 3% increase over the A16 Bionic.

Performance comparison
Compared to other mobile chipsets, the A17 Pro has a clear advantage. It beats Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in both categories.
Compared to desktop processors
Compared to desktop processors, the A17 Pro is almost on par in single-core performance. However, it cannot keep up in the multi-core area. This is because desktop processors have more cores and threads, which allows them to handle multiple tasks simultaneously more efficiently.
Technical details
The A17 Pro chipset is a system-on-a-chip (SoC) that consists of a CPU, GPU, Neural Engine and other components. The CPU of the A17 Pro consists of six cores, two of which operate at a clock rate of 3.75 GHz. The GPU of the A17 Pro consists of 12 cores. The Neural Engine of the A17 Pro is up to two times faster than that of the A16 Bionic.
Conclusion
The performance improvements of the A17 Pro are thoroughly noticeable in practice. Apps launch faster, games run smoother and even demanding tasks like video editing or 3D rendering are done faster with the A17 Pro. The A17 Pro is an interesting chipset that raises smartphone performance to a new level. It is the fastest mobile chip on the market and offers a significant performance boost over the A16 Bionic. Apple has announced that the A17 Pro will also be used in other products like the iPad Pro and the Mac.
