Fittingly for Women’s Day, AMD’s newest baby is now officially born today, even though these pro CPUs in the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 lineup are of course not complete strangers. The CPUs with the code “Chagall”, which are now officially presented, are supposed to be able to clock up to 4.5 GHz. The matching base clock is of course much lower (e.g. 4.1 GHz for the 12-core and 2.7 GHz for the 64-core), so that the specified TDP of 280 watts can be met for all models.
With 12 to 64 cores (i.e. 24 to 128 threads), the advantage over the current Ryzen CPUs from the consumer segment is mainly the very convenient octa-channel memory interface as well as the whopping 128 PCIe lanes of the 4th core. Generation founded. Released today are the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX as the top model with 64 cores, the 5975WX, 5965WX, 5955WX and the 5945WX as the smallest model with only 12 cores.
AMD thus sees itself quite well positioned against Intel’s current Xeon CPUs, even though there is naturally resistance in Team Blue and new products are expected.
Of course, the whole thing can also be summarized again in simplified tabular form:
SKU | Cores | Threads | Base | Boost | PCIe 4.0 lanes | Memory IF | TDP |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX | 64 | 128 | 2.7 GHz | 4.5 GHz | 128 lanes | Octa-Channel | 280 watt |
AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5975WX | 32 | 64 | 3.6 GHz | 4.5 GHz | |||
AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5965WX | 24 | 48 | 3.8 GHz | 4.5 GHz | |||
AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5955WX | 16 | 32 | 4.0 GHz | 4.5 GHz | |||
AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5945WX | 12 | 24 | 4.1 GHz | 4.5 GHz |
No more “prosumer” Threadripper
The popular Threadripper models without the expensive Pro suffix with a braked quad-channel memory interface and only 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes have now unfortunately been cancelled without replacement. Those who need such CPU computing power will either have to rely on Threadripper Pro and suitable sWRX80 boards with the latest AGESA in the future, or go straight to a ready-made workstation like Dell’s ThinkStation P620 (see next page). Unfortunately, flexible migration between the worlds will now no longer be possible. AMD thus also ends the fragmentation and focuses on only two target groups, analogous to Intel: computers and pure workstations. RIP “Prosumer.”
As always, the complete overview of the new Threadripper Pro lineup is provided by AMD’s slide material, which I have attached in high-resolution and without watermarks in the following gallery. If you want to take a closer look at Dell’s workstation, you should definitely keep on browsing, because this part is really brute.
