It has been repeatedly rumored that AMD’s Radeon drivers have a long and not always stable history in terms of reliability and performance issues. Nevertheless, this seems to be happening less frequently as mature and stable driver releases (with certain exceptions) seem to be becoming the norm for Team Red. The assumption that AMD drivers are generally bad would probably be more of a misconception than an actual problem. And yet something always has to confirm this assumption.
Driver updates don’t always go smoothly, as was the case with Adrenalin Software’s recently released version 23.7.2. One user (@carygolombauf Twitter/X) with a Ryzen 7 7840U reported that the driver update mistakenly switched the internal GPU from a Radeon 780M to a slower Radeon 760M, resulting in degraded performance at that level and also causing chaos in his system. The effects were so severe that both internal and external devices stopped working properly – from the Xbox controller to the sound card.
While the single example alone is not enough to paint a comprehensive picture, at least until technology company Digital Foundry responded and confirmed that the Ryzen 7 7840U in its AYANEO PC Gaming Handheld suffered a massive performance hit with the latest driver.
Wow. Haha. Just WOW
Someone tweeted at me that latest AMD Adrenaline 23.7.2 drivers tank performance and show up as 760M in device manager.
It's also managed to disconnect most internal devices, like my fingerprint reader, 360 controller, sound.

When playing the visually intense Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition with real-time ray tracing effects, a performance drop of 33 was noted – from 33 to 22 fps. Interestingly, the Ryzen 7 7840U is also found in ASUS’ ROG Ally. At the time of writing, the Adrenalin software version 23.7.2 performance issues are apparently only showing up in mobile for Radeon. According to other reports, there are no significant performance changes in games with desktop RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 graphics.
Radeon drivers have evolved quite nicely in recent years, and we hope that such issues will be fixed in a future update (we hope for a solution soon). Still, it’s always worrisome when a driver update causes performance issues and devices stop working properly.
