Once again, enthusiast overclockers have taken DDR5 memory to a new level of performance. Using LN2 on Intel’s Z790 platform, DDR5 memory achieved impressive overclocking speeds of 11202 Mbps. The current record was set by American overclocker SEBY9123, who used a single Trident Z5 RGB DIMM from G.Skill to beat the previous record set by renowned overclocker HiCookie (Gigabyte).
SEBY9123 used the ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 APEX motherboard, which is known for its good memory overclocking and space-saving 2-DIMM design. This motherboard was used with an Intel Core i9-13900K CPU set to a frequency of 2.2 GHz for two cores and two threads. System memory consisted of a single G.Skill Z5 RGB DDR5 memory stick. To ensure optimal cooling, both the CPU and memory were cooled with LN2. This cooling allowed for a staggering memory clock speed of 11,202 Mbps or 5,600 Hz.
The CPU-z validation indicates that the memory was run in single-channel mode, which is obvious since only a single stick was used. The timings were shown as 62-126-126-127-127-2. The memory in question is the “F5-7600J3646G16G” DDR5-7600 SKU. Based on this current record overclocking, Skatterbencher has created a list of all historical overclocking records for DRAM. This list includes SDR as well as the latest memory standards like DDR5. The histogram shows that the jump in frequency has been greatest for the DDR5 generation so far. Speed increased from native DDR5-4800 (JEDEC) to LN2 overclocking speeds of 11 Gbit/s or more. This is more than double the reference speeds.
In the first year after the introduction of DDR5, numerous memory manufacturers have already announced speeds of DDR5-8000 and higher. It is expected that DDR5 will continue to gain speed as more powerful hardware becomes available to enthusiasts. There is a distinct possibility that these overclocked LN2 speeds will also be available on mainstream Intel and AMD platforms in a few years.
