Today’s article is not a test, but actually just a teaser and I’ll explain why right away. Yes, I signed the NDA and meanwhile I also have a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. However, this is not a usual (rotation) sample from AMD, but a real retail CPU and bought myself. For this reason, too, I find myself somewhat conflicted. Actually, I wanted to somehow manage the whole thing thanks to a friendly release from AMD in a night shift and jerk action, but then I deliberately decided against a quick shot, just to be on time with something online.
The main reason, by the way, is that already yesterday an extensive review appeared on one of the larger websites, which very uncollegially for all other editors ignored the NDA case set for today. Even if you have not signed an NDA, such a thing is actually an absurdity. I had already mentioned in a news article that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D could become scarce, and if you look at the number of reviews that were officially created with AMD press samples, then there might be something to it. Also, the purchase was not so easy and I will therefore voluntarily (and also because I want to spend Easter times at least a few hours with the family) adhere to the sale NDA of 20.04.2022. It’s a retail CPU from a retailer and I don’t want to get anyone in trouble there.
Just another gaming benchmark? I’ll put it this way: I have neither the time nor the inclination to write the 1001. Review to write, after here so rudely rushed forward. Since the previously published test has made it pointless to put effort into reproducing already known facts, I have therefore come up with a slightly different test course in order to perhaps find details in one or the other place that were not looked at before.
What is planned and why
Thus, I am already working on a comparison with two graphics cards and will do the 720p and 1080p tests with both a once again significantly overclocked MSI Radeon RX 6900XT Gaming X Trio and the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X to be able to compare and recognize the influence of the possible driver overhead more clearly. For this, I compare the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with the Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 7 5800X, as well as the Intel Core i9-12900KS, i9-12900K and i7-12700K as the cheaper variant.
Our comparison of frame times and especially variances will also be interesting, because percentiles are still much too coarse in terms of the interval for a subjective perception. This is where my specific metrics certainly help us significantly. And I will also try to answer the question about exactly measured power consumption and logical efficiency a bit more precisely after all. In addition, there is logically also the cooling capability of the new stacked CPU, which once again poses completely different challenges for a fast and powerful cooling system.
You see, there is even room enough for three articles, which are meant to supplement the current state of knowledge and not to reproduce it. After all, if you work cleanly, you will certainly achieve similar results with identical games. You don’t have to join in a canon of testers, where you’re the last to start and yet only perform the same song lyrics. Boring. I see it more as a challenge to not just release the usual benchmarks into the world, even though it will now take me most of my time over Easter. Hopefully next week we’ll all be a bit smarter. And you can even find a positive side to the somewhat annoying circumstances with it.
So that today’s non-test doesn’t degenerate into a purely verbal statement that bores the eyes, I have at least included the marketing slides for the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D in high resolution and without watermarks. Scrolling through doesn’t hurt and the bars, curves and other metrics are there after simply the holidays. If you’re more of a niche player like me, you’ll get through this, including the crappy weather over Easter. I do not care, it’s warm inside 😀
