The AMD Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point” SKUs will be launched as an update to the current Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix” family. The Phoenix APUs are still very popular and AMD plans to update them first before launching the larger upgrades in the form of the Strix Ryzen 8050 series in mid-2024. The Hawk Point APUs will continue to utilize the Zen 4-core architecture and will be compatible with the FP7/r2 and FP8 platforms, while offering support for DDR5/LPDDR5x memory. In addition, the Hawk Point APUs will be limited to the same RDNA 3 graphics architecture as their predecessors.
With the new list shared by Harukaze5719, it appears that AMD plans to keep the traditional naming scheme, similar to what was seen with the Phoenix family. The APUs are again divided into two different segments: the H-series and the U-series, each with different TDP segments.
Although there is no comprehensive information yet on what these segments will offer, AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 9 8940HS has already been seen in action. This has shown solid performance and meets the expectations of an upgrade.
In a previous leak, the Phoenix3 and Phoenix4 IDs were discovered appearing in the PCI ID repository. This indicates that AMD has now probably decided on the codenames for the Ryzen 8040 series. It seems that the laptop segment in particular will benefit from the Ryzen 8040 APUs, as the “HS series” variants are expected to offer good performance efficiency. However, it is particularly exciting to see how the Hawk Point APUs will contribute to the development of the handheld industry, which has so far had to accept some limitations in the SKUs suitable for this segment. The full list of available SKUs includes:
- Ryzen 9 8940H
- Ryzen 7 8840H
- Ryzen 5 8640H
- Ryzen 7 8840HS
- Ryzen 5 8640HS
- Ryzen 7 8840U
- Ryzen 5 8640U
- Ryzen 7 PRO 8840U
- Ryzen 5 PRO 8640U
The AMD Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point” APU family is expected to be presented for the first time at CES 2024. The first AM5 desktop APU products from AMD, which will be marketed under the name Ryzen 8000, are also expected to be launched in the near future. As we get closer to the launch date, we can expect more exciting information about these upcoming APUs.
