Why always just test what everyone else is testing? After the many exclusive tests of the past weeks, we can once again offer a test candidate in the review today, which has not been seen anywhere yet. We are always happy when packages with mysterious contents reach us. Because that’s exactly when the joy of discovery is called for again. So, too, this time. A small card with propagated big performance – only does the cooling principle envisioned by Afox really work in practice? And if so, what might our ears have to endure? Lots of questions, a graphics card and the time needed to figure it all out.
And something else surprised us: the Radeon HD 6850 is specified with just under 130 watts and the card tested today doesn’t have a separate PCIe connector! Will that ever work out? Confucius says that everything is not eaten as hot as it is cooked… Well.
Technical data
The HD 6850 LP is the first market-ready Radeon 6850 in the low-profile format and thus also the first current mid-range graphics card that can be easily installed in low HTPC cases. The technical specifications do not differ from those of the conventional cards, and the clock has also been left as it is intended for reference. The solution presented here is based on a low 2-slot design with two constantly rotating fans.
In addition to the card, a manual, a CD with drivers and a bracket for low-profile use are also included. The card is equipped with a DVI-D port and a full-size Displayport, HDMI only works via adapter here. Despite a built-in DVI-I connector, no analog signal is passed through. The connector is wired as pure DVI-D, which is definitely a bit confusing. The card doesn’t have another power connector, Afox relies on the durability of modern boards here as it did with the single-slot card. More about that later.
