In today’s test I present my first steps in the CNC machine world. By the way, the TwoTrees 450 that I would like to present today before I use it for my projects comes from Geekbuying, because I have not found it in any German store so far and in the end my curiosity was much bigger than my mistrust. The TwoTrees 450 from today’s project is available from Geekbuying starting at 421.64 Euros in the standard version with an 80W spindle. With a 500W spindle it is also on sale, but not yet available from the aforementioned store. But even that wouldn’t be a hindrance, so you’ll just have to keep looking. The work surface is 460mm by 460mm, which is perfectly adequate for my purposes and also big enough, because I wanted something bigger after all, but which would still fit in the workshop without having to pull in my belly and relocate Grandma’s preserving jars.
Just why are we showing a niche CNC router on Igor’sLab right now? The answer is simple: because there have been requests, and I’ve done a lot of custom builds in the past where I’ve occasionally used 3D-printed parts and had to have CNC work done by third parties. However, the world of CNC works essentially the same way, as we use G-codes or coordinates here as well.
My plan is to mill my own cases or distro plates in the future. So I think my first attempt with CNC milling machines fits perfectly on this page. CNC technology for the DYI sector is not that expensive anymore, so maybe one or the other reader is just looking for an impulse to get creative and productive himself.
Scope of delivery and quality
TwoTrees, or rather Geekbuying, ships the TwoTrees 450 in a plain brown cardboard box, on which it is initially not apparent from the outside what is inside. If you are expecting glossy high-gloss pictures from me today, you will unfortunately be disappointed, because today there is pure and unadorned workshop romance, spiced with some dust and little spiders as curious observers. You’ll have to go through that now, as I had to.
After opening, we see the well-protected parts, which are safely bedded in foam and protected from shocks.
All parts are also additionally labeled and carefully sorted to make them easy to find during later assembly.
Tools are also included, such as an Allen wrench, a brush, a file, a USB cable, a USB stick with Micro SD, an engraving graver, a grooving cutter, and a 3mm two-flute cutter. It’s especially commendable that TwoTrees even includes safety glasses. It’s important to note that this is a milling machine where there is a risk of injury, not a toy.
TwoTrees uses only aluminum for their TwoTrees 450, which in my estimation provides a very good fit. Nevertheless, I recommend using additional tools such as an angle to check when assembling. Because if you work precisely during assembly, you will also achieve a precise result in the end.
For a quick overview, here are the technical data, and then we’ll start assembling:
