The PCI-SIG company announced in a new update that it is continuing to work on its new PCIe 7.0 generation and has now revealed further details about its work and development.
PCI-SIG is the company responsible for the entire PCIe generations and is therefore the brains behind the whole thing. Since the announcement at the US DevCon in June 2022, the company has announced that it is continuing to make progress with the development of the new PCIe 7.0 version. After the 0.3 version, the 0.5 version has now successfully gone online, which is now online for members.
If all goes well, we can expect version 1.0 as early as next year. But what does the PCIe 7.0 Express offer and what goals are planned? First of all, the aim is to achieve a raw bit rate of 128 GT/s. The aim is to achieve up to 512 GB/s bidirectionally via an x16 configuration. Furthermore, we want to use PAM4 signals and focus on channel parameters and range. The aim is to achieve low latency and high reliability. Efficiency is also to be further improved in terms of performance. Of course, the whole thing should also be backwards compatible and any early generations of PCIe should be supported.
For PCI-SIG, PCIe 7.0 technology is intended to be a scalable interconnect solution for data-intensive markets such as 800G Ethernet, artificial intelligence/machine learning, hyperscale data centers, HPC, quantum computing and the cloud. The aim is to meet the high bandwidth requirements of these applications. For this reason, the focus is strongly concentrated on the architecture, channel parameters and range. However, the whole thing should also run with good energy efficiency, which is being worked on further to improve it.
