This week has brought significant advances in the world of gaming technology. NVIDIA unveiled an updated version of their DLSS3 library with a strong focus on improving ray tracing capabilities. At the same time, AMD has unveiled its long-awaited competitor to DLSS3, which is analogously called FSR3. Both upscaling technologies are scheduled for release in the upcoming fall season, though some initial titles could be available as early as next month. Technology reviewers are closely monitoring the releases of FSR3 and DLSS3.5, aiming for direct comparisons between the two. One of the games that lends itself to such comparisons is Cyberpunk 2077, for which it has been officially confirmed that patches for both DLSS 3.5 and FSR3 will be available in the near future.
AMD has stated that there are currently about a dozen games listed for the upcoming FSR3 compatibility list, with more titles in the works. On the other hand, NVIDIA has made official announcements about DLSS3.5 support for games like Cyberpunk, Portal RTX, and Alan Wake 2, with promises that more games will be supported in the near future. All of these technological advances are on schedule for release in the upcoming fall season.
At the same time, NVIDIA has introduced a freshly developed software development kit (SDK) that conveniently includes support for DLSS 3.5. This discovery was made by “emoose,” the creator of DLSSTweaks, a tool that allows gamers to fine-tune DLSS settings and profiles. It should be emphasized that DLSS 3.5 does not automatically enable the ‘Ray Reconstruction’ feature. Developer integration into a game’s graphics pipeline is required to enable this functionality. For users running Unreal Engine 5, this process is expected to be made easier as NVIDIA offers a 3.5 UE5 plugin. Members of the Reddit community have already discovered a readme file that explains the structure of this plugin.
DLSS 3.5 UE5 plugin components:
- DLSS Super Resolution (DLSS-SR)
- Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA)
- Coming soon! – DLSS Ray Reconstruction (DLSS-RR)
Nonetheless, the improved algorithms in DLSS 3.5 have led to some gamers switching libraries, resulting in reported improvements in image quality and a reduction in artifacts in games like The Last of Us and Need for Speed Unbound. However, it is important to acknowledge that simply replacing the DLL does not enable the Ray Reconstruction feature. Developers must consciously integrate this element into their games.
