It is clear to everyone that NVIDIA is a global leader in AI. However, the competition does not like this at all and so, according to Reuters, Intel, Qualcomm and Google have joined forces to act together against NVIDIA.
NVIDIA is making a fortune from the sale of AI chips. According to recent reports, the market capitalization is said to amount to 2.2 trillion dollars. There is one area in particular where NVIDIA can attract millions of customers and that is its CUDA program interface. More than 4 million developers are said to use it to develop AI or other applications.
This is disadvantageous for the competition, which is why NVIDIA wants to focus on this interface. To this end, the company has joined forces with the UXL Foundation. The aim is to develop Intel’s OneAPI, which should make it possible to develop a range of software and tools that can operate several types of AI accelerator chips. The open source project aims to allow computer code to run on any machine, regardless of the chip and hardware powering it. This is what the name oneAPi stands for. One interface for everything. According to Qualcomm’s head of AI Vinesh Sukumar, the aim is to show developers how they can migrate away from NVIDIA and offer them an alternative.
We’re actually showing developers how you migrate out from an Nvidia platform.
For Google’s director and chief technologist of high-performance computing Bill Magro, the goal is also to create an open ecosystem and to be able to demand the choice of hardware
It’s about specifically – in the context of machine learning frameworks – how do we create an open ecosystem, and promote productivity and choice in hardware
How successful this tactic will be remains to be seen. In any case, we can look forward to seeing how the whole thing is driven forward in the near future. It is interesting that such large companies have joined forces to compete against NVIDIA. What could prove difficult, however, is that NVIDIA only recently unveiled their new Blackwell architecture chips, which bring forth a new generation of technology. This will definitely not be an easy undertaking.
