The most popular overclocking tool programmed by Alexey will now continue without MSI support. The reason for this is the ongoing war in Ukraine , resulting in licensing problems. Due to sanctions, companies like MSI are unable to fulfill their obligations under the contract signed with the developer. Alexey himself lives in Russia. The MSI Afterburner as software without MSI support? Thus, the “project is probably dead.”Alexey “Unwinder” Nicolaychuk has now confirmed that the Afterburner project may be on the verge of cancellation.
The developer already confirmed that the project has not been supported for more than 11 months. As he explains, the current political situation prevents MSI from meeting its financial obligations. The project is now supported only by Alexey in his spare time.
MSI Afterburner is one of the most popular tools for overclocking discrete GPUs. The software is a quasi successor of the RivaTuner software that was used for GPU overclocking many years ago. It can be problematic for users to find an alternative that supports all numerous GPU manufacturers out of the box. Most brands now offer their own monitoring and simple overclocking software that also controls GPU functions like the LEDs or fan speed. MSI also has such a tool called MSI Center.
It is worth mentioning that MSI still officially lists the software for newly released GPUs, including RTX 4070 Ti. The popularity of the software means that scammers could try to take advantage of it by releasing cloned apps with malware. MSI is aware of this fact and points out that the official source for the software is still MSI’s own website. The following tweet was posted in November, many months after Afterburner failed to meet its licensing obligations:
The only good news is that RTSS (RivaTuner Statistic Server) is not an MSI tool and therefore is not affected by sanctions. This statistical and overlay software has the full support of Alexey and will continue to be supported. That is, third-party software that uses RTSS should not be affected. Alexey confirms that he will continue to support the Afterburner project in his spare time, but that is not the full support that many of us would like to see. Importantly, the sanctions are not limited to financial compensation, but also to access to pre-release versions of the hardware, essentially stagnating or preventing the development process altogether.
Update: According to Hassan Mujtaba (Wccftech), MSI is now trying to solve the payment problem. So there is a chance that the problem will be fixed after all:
Got an update from MSI regarding this:
"Our product marketing & accounting team are dealing with this problem now. Due to the war, our payment couldn't transfer to the author's bank account successfully. We are still keeping in touch with him and figuring out how to solve this" https://t.co/zj0Ph2SDuk
