With the MSI MEG Silent Gale P12 MSI will place a new case fan on the market in the coming days, which really surprised us in the test. Just another case fan? The fact that this is not quite the case is of course also due to the OEM, since MSI does not manufacture it itself. Maybe the person in charge thought he could save himself the long way to the mainland, because Power Logic Technologies is not that far away from New Taipei City. Which would also clarify the manufacturer.
The fan has a slightly different thickness, similar to the recently reviewed Phanteks T30. The 27.5 mm is exactly between the class-standard 25 mm and the fat 30 mm of the T30. You have to know this and take it into account if it is already tight in the lid between the radiator and the motherboard. But the extra 2.5 mm did anything but harm the fan, because the measurement results prove Power Logic right. The rest of the fan is quickly explained.
The bearing is a HDB (Hydro-Dynamic Bearing) design, a matt black, simple frame and a rotor made of LCP (liquid-crystal polymer) with 9 blades, which does not hide any secrets at first sight. Nevertheless, Power Logic has done a lot of tweaking here (especially on the angle of attack) and thus achieved amazing things. But more about that in a moment in the test. The PWM-controlled fan manages a speed range of up to 2000 rpm and initially starts in semi-passive mode (with fan stop). Again, this isn’t new, but it’s a nice-to-have where the fan doesn’t just keep running constantly below 20% PWM.
The decoupling with the attached rubber corners is more a matter of taste, as it twists slightly with the screw tightened. Glued would make more sense, but you can do that yourself with a drop of superglue. The gap dimensions and surface finish are very good. The power consumption turns out to be quite moderate at full speeds with 1.44 watts. RGB is not available, not even at extra cost. And the price? Is unfortunately still secret, or niemead wanted to lean out of the window here in Germany or the headquarters in Taiwan so far. I’ll have to give it to you soon, but this also proves that MSI didn’t have a direct hand in this. I’m a certified supply specialist!

On the next page you will first see how and what we test and why. Understanding the details is extremely important in order to be able to objectively classify the results later. The differences between many models are more in the details and THE best fan for all situations can hardly exist. There is a certain optimum in every situation and of course there are also good all-rounders. But they usually have their price. But if you plan to use 60mm radiators for example, you might save money by choosing the best model for your application, which might not perform so well as a case fan. And vise versa, of course.
I also have the original data sheet at hand for the new ones:
MEG_SILENT_GALE_P12_Datasheet_20210622
Currently the fan isn’t in stock yet, but I’ll report back when it is, because it could really be worth it as an alternative.
