Modders have once again set about modifying the older generation GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card from NVIDIA. This graphics card was originally released with 8GB of VRAM, but the modders have successfully upgraded it to 16GB. I have also linked a video at the end.
The GeForce RTX 2080 was originally introduced by NVIDIA in 2018 based on the Turing GPU architecture and equipped with the TU104-400 GPU. The GPU has 2944 CUDA cores and 8GB of GDDR6 memory via a 256-bit memory interface. The modification to the GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card included the removal of the old 8GB memory and the soldering of 16GB GDDR6 memory. In addition, the jumpers were adjusted to fool the GPU into recognizing the new memory on the card.
The modified RTX 2080 graphics card with its new 16GB framebuffer is easily recognized by the regular NVIDIA WHQL drivers and works without software modifications. The modification was less of a hassle for the team as the customer had provided the additional memory themselves. Although adding an additional 8GB of VRAM to the GeForce RTX 2080 will not double the gaming performance, you might notice a slight performance increase in games that are limited to the VRAM. However, this will not be significant, but limits are at least history.
It’s always interesting to modify an older graphics card and double the RAM, especially when there are no pesky mods or other customizations required to make it work. The modification shows the flexibility and adaptability of hardware by experienced modders. Thus, the modification of the GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card to 16GB VRAM is an interesting project that demonstrates the possibilities of hardware modification.
