In the brand new SUP-01 case, LIAN LI is breaking new ground in many respects to cool components as efficiently as possible. Read on to find out why radical solutions can often overshoot the mark and why new concepts often bring new inconveniences.
When LIAN LI unveiled its latest concepts in 2023, many PC builders were beside themselves with excitement. At least if Reddit is to be believed, many potential customers were euphorically waiting for the SUP-01, which was supposed to offer at least the cooling performance of the company’s own “regular” towers with a relatively small footprint. With completely new installation points for AIO coolers, case fans and even graphics cards, attention was drawn to the radical approach of the SUP-01. However, based on the experiences of the last few years, and I’m thinking primarily of the CTE design from Themaltake, concerns quickly arose and these grew even more when I finally had the case on my desk for testing. But before I give too much away, let’s unpack the case together.
Important note
Shortly before the official review embargo, LIAN LI informed us that the dust filters used can have a significant influence on the cooling performance of the case. Due to time constraints, we were unfortunately unable to include the influence of the filters in the article. In view of the unfavorable orientation of the graphics card, we would only submit a short follow-up test if our readers were interested.
Unboxing
The outer box has a simple design. Single-color print, no stickers, no promises.
After opening it, we first find the box with the accessories, which we will unpack at the end.
Instead of brittle “polystyrene”, pieces of which tend to break off when unpacking, LIAN LI uses a softer and more flexible foam.
Free of foam and plastic film:
The mesh grille on the front is easy to remove:
Inside we find a magnetic dust filter.
The right side panel is also made entirely of mesh and is easy to remove. In contrast to the front, however, there is no dust filter here.
We also find many perforated areas at the rear. Apart from the graphics card installed in the front, only expansion cards in low-profile format can be installed. Here you can also see how narrow the case is, even though it has two compartments.
There are two brackets in the rear chamber. The left-hand one holds up to three 120 mm fans, the right-hand one can also hold either three 120 mm or two 140 mm fans – it also serves as a radiator bracket.
The pre-installed fans make a solid first impression. They are directly “connected through” with short cables (daisy chain) to avoid unnecessary cable clutter.
A total depth of up to 10 cm is available in the rear chamber, which means that thicker radiators can also be accommodated.
At the bottom, we find four rubberized feet and a pull-out filter for the power supply fan:
The lower chamber offers space for the HDD cage and the power supply unit.
Unfortunately, a power supply frame has to be used for space reasons.
However, the power supply unit is “comfortably” bedded on soft rubber buffers.
The front I/O is located on the left-hand side under the glass panel. Here we find two Type-A and one Type-C socket, as well as a 3.5mm combo jack and two buttons for controlling the integrated ARGB controller.
Power and reset buttons are located on the front. Cool: the two parts of the manufacturer’s logo each form a button.
Finally, let’s take a look at the main chamber of the housing.
The floor is decorated with a mirror plate, which creates a great effect!
The lid can be partially dismantled (we will find out “why” later), but cannot accommodate a fan.
The graphics card is mounted “upright” in the front of the case. A bracket with four slots is available for this purpose. The bracket can be installed at two heights and, in the lower position, also offers the option of “centering” the installed graphics card in the front.
The graphics card is connected via a long riser cable, which is even equipped with RGB lighting at the slot.
On the opposite side, we find the PCIE slot, which complies with the 4.0 standard.
Don’t forget: The “centering Nubsi” is also on board the SUP-01.
Finally, the contents of the accessories box. In addition to the instructions, a well-stocked box with screws and a bracket for a 120mm fan (optionally mountable at the rear) is included.
