Intel Core i5-8400: how good is the "small" i5 in practice?

Since Coffee Lake-S is becoming more and more a digital launch and the hardware is not really available in quantities, we could actually take our time. Summary

As with the slightly more expensive Core i5-8600K, the Same applies to the Core i5-8400: Two cores more for the middle class are a nice addition. But whether they will really be sufficient in the near future remains to be seen. Because with hyper-threading disabled, it's actually only a matter of time before the software catches up with the hardware again. Some of the compute benchmarks are particularly clear that this can be a disadvantage. So where can you really rate the Core i5-8400?

It is definitely a solid mid-range CPU, but with a penchant for higher. In places, the Core i5-8400 can even compete with the more expensive Core i5-8600K, as long as you don't use the open multiplier. AMD's Ryzen 5 1600X overclocks an acceptable figure and can often keep up and even pass in the production range from time to time. This usually no longer applies to the Ryzen 5 1500X and also the Ryzen 5 1400 plays here rather in the circle class and no longer in the second division.

Conclusion

We have been fighting with us for a long time to reward a paper digital launch with an award. However, since soon delivery dates have been reported, it has become a buying tip for all those who are supposed to give 6 cores a little more future security when playing and who can do without hyper-threading due to lack of suitable software.

The Core i5-8400 is a good compromise to the Core i5-8600K, if you can or want to do without an open multiplier, no question. But whether you will be able to do without HT in the long run must be proven by the future. If so, the Core i5-8400 is also hopeful of a longer stay in the PC. At least he would have what it takes.
